THE COCKTAIL CLUB - JULY 2022

Hot summer day? Sip some ice cold cognac.

THE SIDECAR

INGREDIENTS

1.5 oz Cognac

.75 oz Lemon Juice

.75 oz Dry Curacao

Orange Peel (Spiral)

HOW TO MAKE IT

Step One | Add all of the above ingredients into a shaker tin

Step Two | Fill the glass with ice + shake vigorously

Step Three | Strain your chilled cocktail into a martini or coupe glass
*extra points if you have a hawthorne strainer*

Step Four | Garnish with a spiraled orange peel

WHY DO WE SHAKE?

The simple answer? We’re adding water! While shaking your cocktail, think of moving your ice from the back of the tin to the front of the tin…. lots. We’re doing this until your tin is cold to touch.

HOW TO SPIRAL
AN ORANGE PEEL

This bar technique will require a channel knife.

Carefully cut an orange (moving around the sphere) to create a skinny, seven inch long peel.

You will then twist the peel gently around a bar spoon, giving a tight twist once it’s fully wrapped.

Once it’s taken shape, slowly let the spiral fall down the bar spoon.

Ta da!

ABOUT THE SIDECAR

Thought to have been created by Harry McElhone of Harry's American Bar in Paris, France.  Stemming from its parent cocktail, the Brandy Crusta, the Sidecar became more popular as it was a much "sturdier" cocktail.  The swap of cognac for brandy gave a more consistent drink because brandy can be variable in its composition, with more fruit sources allowed for production.

ABOUT OUR SIDECAR

There are many who hold to old practices, and make a sidecar by rimming the glass with sugar.  For us, the curacao and the richness of the cognac give all the sweetness and mouthfeel that is needed.

…Also, the sugar rim can sometimes run and cause more of an ugly mess.
